Thinking about a concrete coating for your garage, basement, or patio? Floor Shield of Michigan gets a lot of the same questions from homeowners across the state — from how we prep a floor to how soon you can park on it. Below are answers to the ones we hear most.
Concrete Prep & Diamond Grinding
Do you diamond grind for concrete prep?
Yes. Every floor is diamond ground before we apply a coating. Diamond grinding mechanically profiles the concrete — removing weak surface layers, oils, and contaminants and creating the rough texture our coatings need to properly bond. It's a more effective (and more consistent) method than acid etching, and it's a big part of why Floor Shield coatings hold up under Michigan's heavy use, road salt, and temperature swings.
Do you moisture test before coating?
Yes — we test every floor with a moisture meter and can install a moisture vapor barrier when needed. This step matters most in high-water-table areas and newer developments built on former wetland, such as Canton, Farmington Hills, Grand Blanc, and Fenton, where we're seeing a growing need for it. If your home was built on a previous wetland area, or anywhere the water table runs high, there's a good chance you'll need a moisture vapor barrier for the coating to succeed long-term.
Do you do concrete repairs to prepare for floor coating?
Yes. Before we coat a floor, we repair spalling, pitting from salt damage, popping, cracking, and chipping so the coating goes over a sound, stable surface.
Timeline
How long do I have to wait for service?
Not long. We run multiple crews to keep turnaround quick, and most jobs are scheduled within a week of your consultation.
Company Info
Are you US based?
Yes. Floor Shield of Michigan serves homeowners across the state, and Floor Shield is an American-made coating system.
Aftercare
How long until I can walk on the floor?
About 4 hours. We recommend waiting at least 48 hours before driving a vehicle or rolling heavier machinery or objects onto the floor.
How do I clean it?
Floor Shield concrete coatings clean up easily with a mild detergent — dish soap and water work great.
Can I use a pressure washer on my concrete floor coating?
It depends on the coating. Floor Shield's polyaspartic coatings are strong enough to be pressure washed. If your floor has an epoxy coating instead, though, pressure washing can cause chipping, peeling, and other damage — so stick to a hose and mild detergent for those floors.
